In this video, I palpate the soleus muscle.

The soleus attaches to both of the bones that make up the lower leg, and the calcaneus via the achilles tendon.

Like many of the muscles in the human chain, the role of the soleus is (very often!) misunderstood.

Unfortunately, the college text books lead everyone to believe that the muscle is primarily responsible for sagittal plane motion at the ankle joint in the open-chain. But, the truth is, the soleus is responsible for decelerating, and accelerating motion in the frontal plane, transverse plane and the sagittal plane.

The soleus is very often under-performing which means it is not firing on demand. When this is occurring (and very often it is!), the foot will stay on the ground much longer than it should.

In order for the athlete to be more explosive in on ground function, the soleus has to have the optimal amount of neurological input.

The only way to increase the neurological feedback to the soleus muscle: palpate the attachments of the muscle. How? Compress the attachments into the bone, and apply a Circular Friction and/or a Transverse Friction to stimulate the muscle.
