Part 1 of a 2-part talk. In her talk "When the Mark Says WOOf: Pet Psychics and Alternative Veterinary Practices," Tana Owens discusses two dubious trends making inroads in the multi-billion dollar U.S. pet industry. First, she discusses the vagaries of "animal communication" -- including sharing her experience with an animal communicator after the passing of one of her own pets. Then, she delves into the world of CAVM (complementary and alternative veterinary medicine), introducing the audience to available treatments and explaining the American Veterinary Medical Association's take on the same. As animals are such an important part of many people's lives, she feels that it is important to protect them from "woo" as well!
