In this webinar from JDI, advocates will gain a better understanding of the crisis of sexual violence in prison -- and learn how they can help inmates who have survived this abuse. The session will provide a summary of the new opportunities for expanding services behind bars resulting from the recently issued Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) national standards. The standards require that prisons provide inmates who report sexual abuse with access to victim advocates. They also mandate that corrections agencies partner with community-based organizations to ensure comprehensive medical and mental health care for survivors.

The webinar will provide an overview of sexual abuse in detention that addresses the prevalence of this violence, including the high rates of staff abuse; the factors that contribute to prisoner rape; and its long-term, often devastating impact on the lives of survivors. The webinar will also feature conversations with two members of JDI's Survivor Council to provide first-hand accounts of their experiences of sexual abuse in prison. The training will conclude with a question-and-answer session.

Who Should Attend:

This webinar is aimed at advocates and service providers -- rape crisis center staff, counselors, and administrators -- though anyone who works in the victim services field is encouraged to attend. Corrections officials, law enforcement, and other professionals in related fields are also invited.

"Understanding the Issue" is the first of a three-part series of webinars on providing services to survivors of sexual abuse in prison. The series is part of JDI's National Sexual Violence in Detention Education and Resource Project, which is supported by the U.S. Department of Justice's Office on Violence Against Women. JDI is an international health and human rights organization that seeks to eliminate sexual violence in all forms of detention.
