Importers and profiteers of the offensively implausible and opportunistic wrist band scam known as "Power Balance" have, "acknowledged it [Power Balance Australia] had breached the code and said the relevant claims [of increased athletic performance] had been removed from its website", under pressure from The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. Whilst this is only one brand of rip off it is indeed the most vocal - hence offensive.

Aussie customers are entitled to a full refund. Call 1800 733 436. The bands are made for about ten cents Australian in Asia, and, with packaging and shipping arrive at a cost to Power Balance Australia of about One dollar AU. Until recently they have been sold for $60:00.

ACCC chairman Graeme Samuel said in a statement: "Power Balance has admitted that there is no credible scientific basis for the claims and therefore no reasonable grounds for making representations about the benefits of the product.

"Its conduct may have contravened the misleading and deceptive conduction section of the Trade Practices Act 1974," Mr Samuel said.

"Suppliers of these types of products must ensure that they are not claiming supposed benefits when there is no supportive scientific evidence," said ACCC chairman Graeme Samuel. "Consumers should be wary of other similar products on the market that make unsubstantiated claims, when they may be no more beneficial than a rubber band." ACCC Chairman, Graeme Samuel, Dec. 23rd 2010.

'It's a crock, frankly,' Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairman Graeme Samuel said. 'And we're very disappointed that so many people have paid hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars to buy these Power Bands.'

Anyone unfortunate enough to have been scammed by this criminal sham of *providing better balance, strength and flexibility by working with the wearer's "natural energy field"* - including those who bought them for parents with Parkinson's or children with Cerebral Palsey and ABI induced neurological balance deficits, should make the small effort to call the above number for a refund and buy your loved one something worthwhile. Perhaps an annual subscription to The Australian Skeptic??

Which reminds me. Thanks to Victorian Skeptics and Australian Skeptics for bringing this outrage to the attention of the relevant regulatory body/s in concern.
