On Sat. Nov 8, 2014 the Christleys and Portzlines sent a weather balloon up to the edge of space as a homeschool science experiment. Under the balloon was a parachute and a styrofoam cooler filled with toys and seeds to see what would happen to them in space. We also had 3 cameras inside to take pictures and videos, including an Apple iPhone 6+ to take time lapse images. We launched from Delta, Utah at 4:05pm. It rose for 8 hours through the atmosphere. It got as cold as -76 F with 72 mph winds! It finally reached 105,000 feet altitude (20 miles high) and was 30 ft in diameter and then popped at 11:51pm! It floated/fell back to earth in 27 minutes. During its journey it had drifted 100 miles southeast and then 150 miles southwest and landed in the Nevada desert. A GPS spot tracker in the cooler told us exactly where it touched down within 30 feet of accuracy. If it had continued drifting another 100 miles it would have landed in Area 51! We were all so surprised and ecstatic and joyful to find it and get all our stuff back! We can’t believe it worked! Our 3-hour experiment that somehow turned into a 3-day, 1000-mile adventure is one that we will never forget.
