The European Velo Marathon 2012 - the alternative Olympic Torch Relay for Road Peace aims to unite Europe in improving cycle safety and to encourage more people to travel by bycicle.
The relay is being led by Mladen Belchev from Bulgaria who nearly died in a cycling accident in his home town. Despite his injuries Mladen is undertaking a 2500 mile marathon from Pleven, Bulgaria to the Olympic stadium in London using the EUROVELO routes.
The marathon will start on June 2, 2012, from Sofia, Bulgaria and finish in London, UK on July 25, 2012, two days before the official opening of the Olympic Games in London will happen. The aim is to cycle the 3000km from Pleven, visit the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne, Switzerland and arrive safely for the opening of the Olympic Games. We also aim to promote actively RoadPeace and supporting local causes along the way.
