Gosselin and McInnis discuss the application of Darwin's ideas to real societies. Darwin's ideas weren't new, Erasmus Darwin, Lamarck, Buffon had proposed similar concepts. Darwin's originality was a belief system. As an origins myth Darwinism was necessary to provide a foundation for the Enlightenment worldview. In Galapagos, Vonnegut breaks with a Disney-like "happy ending" and presents his anti- Enlightenment view on the Big Brain. Progress is actually bad and will be reversed and humans will return to the animal state where they will be much happier (no wars). Will genetic engineering be the next stage in evolution? Will this usher in a society similar to that portrayed in the movie Gattaca?
