The UC Preservation Risk Information SysteM (PRISM) is a software instrument developed by the University of California to help UC libraries identify, evaluate, and manage risks of damage and loss to their collections. PRISM is a Microsoft Excel workbook with customized screens to guide a user through several steps to inform decision-making on cost effective management of collection risks. The steps include:
• Identifying common hazards to the long-term survival of the collection
• Creating a "risk profile" by estimating the probability and business impact of losses associated with the identified hazards
• Evaluating the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of potential changes to reduce risk
• Using the relative cost effectiveness of potential changes to assist management decision-making with limited resources
Presented by Barclay Ogden, Director for Library Preservation at UCB, and Sean Catanese, senior Bickmore consultant.
