For this entry in my Obscure Video Game Music series, we go to an obscure unlicensed Game Boy fighter titled "Soul Falchion", developed by the equally obscure Taiwanese company Vast Fame. This tune is used in the forest stage, home to the characters Lulu and Paladin.
Soul Falchion is interesting because, in a typically bootleg fashion, it rips off things from all sorts of places. Many of the character names are taken directly from Mortal Kombat, while the sprites are edited from various Neo Geo Pocket fighters. The game engine itself is hacked from Takara's King of Fighters port for Game Boy. And the sound engine was reverse-engineered from Mega Man V.
Yet despite this, it's quite an enjoyable game, particularly given its unlicensed status-- and the music is better than that of many *licensed* games. Oh, yeah, and the Engrish end-of-fight taunts are classic.
I'm posting this in memory of the recently deceased "ugetab", who ripped this soundtrack into a GBS file for all to enjoy. If you like this tune and want to hear more from ugetab's rip (including several tunes not used in the game itself!), you can find the file in the Halley's Comet Software GBS archive at http://gbs.hcs64.com/.
