2015 saw 23 murders and 24 suicides of trans/gnc folks in the US alone. It doubled the murder rate of the year before and stats were similar around the world. It was the most violent year on record to date. Until 2016.

Trans and gender non-conforming people face staggering amounts of violence every year. In 2016, we know of 249 trans/gnc folks who were murdered as of between 1/1 - 11/17. 25 of those were in the US alone. We couldn't find numbers for the suicides, but it's thought to be similarly, shockingly high. And these are just the ones we know about. Many aren't reported or misreported so the real numbers are likely much higher.

Most of the murders are of trans women, specifically trans women of color. In the US, almost 90% of the known 2016 murders were of trans women of color. This isn't just a problem--it's an epidemic.
But there is hope. In 1966, trans people led the Compton's Cafeteria Riot in SF where the queer community rose up. It's one of the earliest known examples of collective, militant resistance to trans oppression in the US, possibly the world. Trans people followed this up in 1969 by leading the Stonewall Riots in NY in which queers again rose up. We've kept fighting and we won't stop until we've won.
To help combat this violence, we are selling "I ❤ Trans People" shirts to show you're with us. All funds raised will go towards a memorial fund to help with passing costs for low income trans/gnc folks in SF. For more info, please check out https://www.booster.com/i-love-trans-....

Also please join us on November 20 for Transgender Day of Remembrance to remember our fallen family. To find one near you, check out tdor.info. For more info on the SF event, check out tdorsf.org.
