F1 GP for the 3DO. Man is this ever an F1 racing game. Published by Pony Canyon, this Japan-only release has many admirable qualities: real life F1 teams and drivers, 16 real world tracks, fairly extensive customization of your vehicle's handling including 3 save slots to store favorite setups, and time trial, single race, and full championship mode.
The audiovisuals aren't the greatest, but they are serviceable for the time period and console. And when playing a time trial where you are the only car on the track, F1 GP seems pretty decent. Sure, the frame rate can be inconsistent at times, but the handling is generally pretty good.
Unfortunately, most of the good feelings this game provides go out the window when playing against other cars. The framerate becomes much more variable when there's other cars around you, and the handling suffers a lot, to the point where sometimes it's not even that responsive. Also, you can sometimes pass right through CPU cars without a dent. And the computer controlled vehicles will also just disappear, then reappear down the track. This is not good.
So if you care about racing against other cars, F1 GP is not really very good. If you really enjoy time trials, then it is OK. This is certainly not a game to recommend to someone, but if you can look past its flaws, and find it really cheap, and you really like the 3DO, and you don't mind pixelated graphics, and any number of other qualifiers I can give, it might be worth checking out. :)
