Pres. Obama launched a new round of peace talks today between the leaders of Israel, Jordan, Egypt and the Palestinian Authority. Among security and other settlement issues, a major objective of the talks is to agree on details of a Palestinian state alongside Israel within a year.

Earlier, the president spoke from the Rose Garden on the negotiations between the Israeli and Palestinian leaders. On the goal of achieving a peace deal, the president expressed, "if we don't make the attempt, then failure is guaranteed."

Tomorrow, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other diplomatic officials will conduct direct negotiations between Netanyahu and Abbas to set parameters for the talks.
