Paced feedings are really important for all babies that take a bottle, but breastfeeding infants especially need care and attention during the feeding if supplement is needed.

In most cases this should be done by someone other than the mother and if the baby is breastfeeding well the mom might even need to leave the house because your baby knows where their milk comes from and may refuse if you are readily available.

If the baby is refusing the breast or mom has a low milk supply and supplementation is needed this can also be a way to get baby back to the breast while ensuring that they are getting all the calories that they need to grow.

If this is the case then mom could give the bottle. Ideally this would be done with the baby's cheek resting against the skin of mothers breast and we could occasionally allow baby to try to latch, lick or nuzzle from mom's nipple. Overall we just want mom's chest to be a place of comfort and satisfaction.

Thank you to the Pais (pronounced "pace") family for giving me permission to share this video with other mothers. I hope it is helpful.

Paced feeding instructions:

1.Sit baby mostly upright and preferably with the baby's cheek literally touching your breast and nipple.
2. Touch the baby's top lip just under the nose with the bottle tip and wait for baby to reach for it.
3. Bring the bottle nipple deep into baby's mouth. You want to see a wide open jaw and flanged lips. (this is similar to the breastfeeding experience).
4. Watch for swallows. After 2-3 swallows lower the bottom of the bottle so that milk no longer fills the nipple. This encourages baby to take a break.
5. Wait for baby to start sucking again.
6. When baby starts sucking again - lift the bottle (basically parallel to the ground) so that the milk goes into the tip of the nipple.
7. After 2-3 swallows lower again.
8 Repeat

The rhythm that you are looking for is Suck Swallow... Suck Swallow... Breathe... Breathe - Suck Swallow... Suck Swallow... Breathe... Breathe.
