This video chronicles the flight of a weather balloon launched by Mrs. Gulbrandson's 8th Grade class from Hermantown during the Duluth Balloon Festival at about 1:27pm on September 21st, 2013. Total Flight time is 1:53 minutes. This video is condensed for highlights in 6 minutes 40 seconds. The balloon popped at an estimated 65,000ft and landed 71 miles southeast of Duluth near Hayward, WI. Altitude was determined from an on board flight computer that loses contact with the GPS satellite's at about 48 minutes into the flight. The maximum speed reached was 71mph during ascent.
The balloon, kit, gps and cameras were provided by Kernz & Company. They also produced the Balloon Festival.
Guidance and education was provided by the Duluth branch of the National Weather Service (Carol Christenson, Kenneth Branning, Michael Stewart, Declan Cannon and Melody Lovin)
Tracking and retrieval was spearheaded by the St. Louis County Rescue Squad (Nate Peterson - Supervisor)
