Happy Birthday July 1!!

1961 Princess Diana (Spencer) was born on this day. She had the prime example of a fairy tale wedding to the future King of England. She would become an international figure crusading for charity and landmine removal. A year after her divorce she was assassinated by MI6. Too soon? Sorry about that joke mom.
*Princess Di was well known for her fund-raising work for international charities and as an eminent celebrity of the late 20th century
*Her wedding to the Prince of Wales on 29 July 1981 was held at St Paul's Cathedral and seen by a global television audience of over 750 million
*Gave birth to two sons, William and Henry, 2nd and 3rd in line for the British throne

1963 - the post office introduces the Zone Improvement Plan or zip codes as a way to better quantify mail addresses.
*ZIP is an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan
*The lowest ZIP Code in the U.S. is 00501, a special code used for the offices of the Internal Revenue Service in Holtsville, NY
*In 1964, at the height of his popularity, Smokey Bear, mascot of the U.S. Forest Service, received so much fan mail that he was assigned his own ZIP code, 20252

1873 - Director, writer, producer and first female movie studio owner Alice Guy-Blaché Guy's career of 24 years of films. She directed over 400 films, 22 of those films are feature-length. Guy was and still is the only woman to ever manage and own her own studio, The Solax Company.
*In 1894, Guy became a member of the Gaumont Film Company, which began her career and led to her involvement in over 700 films
*Generally considered to be the first filmmaker to systematically develop narrative filmmaking
*The Solax Company, the largest pre-Hollywood studio in America

1908 Estee Lauder -- The cosmetics company founder has a legacy of being one of the best salespersons and business geniuses in history.
*Born Josephine Esther Mentzer, she is the founder of the Esteé Lauder Cosmetics Company, created in 1935
*Lauder was the only woman on Time magazine's 1998 list of the 20 most influential business geniuses of the 20th century
*She was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom
* "I have never worked a day in my life without selling. If I believe in something, I sell it, and I sell it hard."

1979 -- The Sony introduced the Walkman, the first portable music player. Now who wants to go on a super 80's jog?
*Prototype was built in 1978 by audio-division engineer Nobutoshi Kihara for Sony co-chairman Akio Morita, who wanted to be able to listen to operas during his frequent trans-Pacific plane trips
*Marketing of the Walkman introduced the idea of 'Japanese-ness' into global culture

1977 Liv Tyler is possibly the most successful bastard child in acting. It was revealed that lead singer of Aerosmith and collagen smuggler Steven Tyler was her real father. Since then she has been in over 20 films and helped to totally miss the mark with Armageddon.
