When cycling your aquaponics system you will need to test your water.

Water testing can be done with strips or liquid test kits.

There are pros and cons to both methods of testing.

Generally it is believed that the liquid testing is more acurate. The test strips are believed to degrade over time, and eventually give inaccurate readings.

However the test kit with liquid is made of some very serious chemicals. I found that it was a bit stressful handling those serious chemicals while working with my son.

Overall the test strips are much easier to use. However our strips do not test ammonia, so I would need to find another strip to test that. I prefer the easy use of the strip. They are more expensive to use, but as a small scale hobby aquaponics system, I think it is worth it to keep away from the scary chemicals.

However overtime they may give inaccurate readings. I will continue to compare results over time and see if in fact they become inaccurate, or if they hold up in comparison to the liquid test results.
