Kosher Chef from Eden Wok enters 4th Annual Chinese Culinary Competition in Times Square

On Thursday, September 22, Times Square was transformed into the ancient Chinese city of Chang'an in a mobile "kitchen stadium" for the 4th Annual Chinese Culinary Competition. Chefs from around the world sliced, diced and stir fried in a round-robin style through eight one-hour rounds in front of 5 judges. With the assistance of Elan Kornblum, Publisher of Great Kosher Restaurants Magazine, this year marked the first time a chef from a kosher restaurant participated in the event. With locations in Manhattan and Westchester, Eden Wok Executive Chef Sam Chen Kwai cooked a selected dish, Kung Pao Chicken and a judge chosen dish with a secret ingredient, beef. All ingredients that Chef Kwai used were kosher and supervised by the Orthodox Union. The competition was organized by the New Tang Dynasty television station in Manhattan, a not for profit organization, in order to bring awareness to traditional Chinese Culinary cuisine. The event was broadcast worldwide on the Chinese station as well as live on the internet. The coordinators were very excited to bring the element of kosher to the event to show how Chinese cuisine can be adapted to other cultures. Mr. Kornblum is already looking forward to next year, where he hopes to bring more kosher chefs to the Times Square event, where they can battle it out for title of "Best Kosher Chinese Chef." Pictures and video of the event can be seen on GreatKosherRestaurants.com
