A whole week of action on the Iowa Interstate Railroad! Well almost a whole week. Due do a class I had to take, I missed the train on Wednesday May 23rd. First, we start of with what I thought was one of the smallest CBBI trains I've ever seen. ES44AC #503 leads a small mixed freight through Wiota, Iowa on Sunday, May 20th. Then Monday, May 21st, #500 leads an even smaller intermodel train through Wiota and I have to wonder if they made any profit with that train. It was by far the smallest train I've ever seen on the IAIS. Tuesday, May 22nd, I catch action on the north side of Atlantic as local GP38-2 #712 pulled a cut of 50 covered hopper cars onto the elevator spur. A few minutes later, the CBBI pulls into Atlantic and its power, ES44AC's #501 and #506 back onto the spur to pick up the covered hoppers. #712 follows right behind and the local crew couples the rear of the hoppers to the remainder of the CBBI consist and #501 and #506 are eastbound very quickly. I was able to get ahead of them and catch them 2 miles east of Atlantic. The we jump to Thursday, May 24th, and I catch GP38-2 #714 leading ES44ACs #510 and #511 east of Atlantic. It was really nice to see the Geep leading. Friday, March 25th, CBBI pulls through Atlantic with ES44ACs #504 and #508. The IAIS has been doing some significant work in the Atlantic yard, replacing switches, adding ballast and cleaning it up, so I'm betting there was a temporary speed restriction in affect which is why they were going at a snails pace. Finally, Saturday, May 26th finds us east of Atlantic again as ES44AC's #510 and #511 make another appearance. I really enjoy watching the IAIS crews work and they always toss a friendly wave or a quick toot of the horn. The IAIS is definitely one of the best railroads to railfan.
