This is my first short film, and I am quite proud of it. It details the last days of Norman Bowker, a Vietnam veteran, as depicted in the story "The Things They Carried", written by Tim O'Brien. Specifically, it recreates the chapter under the same name, "Speaking of Courage".
Norman Bowker suffers heavily in his mind after the war, feeling like he died in Vietnam. The loss of a close friend, the Native American soldier Kiowa, Bowker feels little joy or value in his dormant life. He drives aimlessly around, and feels the urge to tell someone about his troubles - but he cannot tell them.
It was made as a school project - an artistic project to represent certain elements of the novel. I took special care in giving the effect of solitude, and I feel that with no dialogue, the film is more powerful.
