Dr Mahony is the 17th Master appointed since the foundation of the National Maternity Hospital in 1894 and she is the first woman to head this Hospital.
As Master at the National Maternity Hospital Rhona is head obstetrician at Ireland's busiest maternity hospital where 9,500 babies are born every year, which is equivalent to one-in-eight of all children born annually in Ireland.
She has overall responsibility for the mums and babies' health, for the 700 staff who work in the Hospital and for the hospital's infrastructure and budgeting.
Dr Mahony is a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist and specialist in foetal and maternal medicine at the National Maternity Hospital.
She studied medicine at University College Dublin and graduated in 1994 with first-class honours in obstetrics and gynaecology. She was also presented with the John F. Cunningham Medal in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from the National Maternity Hospital in 1995.
