Dr. Robert Gabourie, Innovative founder of Niagara Prosthetics & Orthotics, teamed up with researchers at Queens University in Kingston, Canada, and DuPont to create a more affordable and durable prosthetic foot. They used DuPont™ Hytrel®, a flexible, sturdy polymer proven to withstand three million cycles of use. This prosthetic will be available to amputees in developing countries for less than $100 and can provide better work and living opportunities for amputees. This short video follows Jesus Carlos, a market trader and amputee who uses the Niagara Foot.
JESÚS CLAROS MARKET TRADER, EL SALVADOR I wear my prosthesis all day, from 5 o'clock in the morning until night. From when I set out in the morning I'm working hard all day. I had one artificial foot that lasted only 15 days.

DR. BRENDA TAPIA GÓMEZ TECHNICAL MANAGER, HANDICAP INTERNATIONAL An energy-return foot can cost as much as $5000 for one foot....one foot!
JESÚS CLAROS I was 18 years old when I was shot. I was hit in the right knee. We are a poor family. And we have a handicapped child who is a concern. Like any parent, I want to provide for him.
DR. TIM BRYANT PROFESSOR, QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY CANADA Mobility is really the key to independent living. So we're developing a prosthetic foot called the Niagara Foot.

ROBERT GABOURIE FOUNDER, NIAGARA PROSTHETICS AND ORTHOTICS INTERNATIONAL The materials search for the foot was difficult because we needed a product that was flexible, formable, and affordable.
HELGA PLISHKA ENGINEER, DUPONT PLASTICS The material selected was Hytrel® and it can absorb and release energy, which mimics the motion of a human foot.
ROBERT GABOURIE Our goal was to make this cost less than a hundred dollars and we've achieved it. Without the DuPont people, there's no chance it would have worked.
HELGA PLISHKA There's probably twenty million amputees globally that can benefit from this application.
ROBERT GABOURIE The foot allows them to have a longer working day that would equate into a better lifestyle for their families in ways that we can't imagine.
JESÚS CLAROS I feel better and safer walking on rough terrain. I feel safer when I take a step and when I pick up my son. I am so grateful for my Niagara foot.
