Hi, I'm David with Smartscapes, LLC here in Nashville, Tennessee, and I'm here to talk to you about how to landscape with rocks. Well, everybody has a little different method but we found this method works the best for us. First, we'll prepare the bed similar to like we're preparing it for mulch, that being, we'll mark out the area and we'll use either a hose pipe or some spray paint to make the area of the bed. Then we remove the turf that's existing in the bed. Usually, we'll use a sod cutter and what the sod cutter does is a great job of getting two inches below the actual turf and cutting the root system out. By and large, that's the most important thing. Some people they'll use a product like Roundup to kill the root system and then go weed it down and go over the top of it and the Roundup isn't quite as green, and not as many people like to do it so we prefer to do the sod cutter method. You can also use a spade shovel and get up underneath it and cut the sod out. Regardless, you get rid of your turf and you want to make sure that the root system is completely gone. After you do that, you place your plants where you want to have them and then some people will go ahead and put down plastic in their beds. I'm not a big proponent of it. I don't feel like your bushes get the right amount of nutrients through the air, through the rock, through the water. Also, weeds can grow on top of the plastic a whole lot easier than they grow underneath it, so over time as sediment fills in the rock in your landscape, you'll wind up having weeds coming up through it and you'll be upset wondering why you have weeds in there because weeds can grow on top of rocks and you get sediment in between the rocks. So you've placed your bushes and you can or cannot put plastic down, install your bushes and then simply come in there with a wheelbarrow full of rock or bags of rock, spread it out. You probably want to have it about an inch or two deep, lay it out pretty even, use your hands if you need and there you've got it.
