Matthew has spent 7 years traveling to 40 countries as a photojournalist. He's worked 126-hour weeks for 43 days straight fishing with felons on Alaska's Bering Sea. He's motorcycled the mountains of northern Laos, drank moonshine on Cuba's coast, camel-backed through India's Thar Desert, escaped flash floods in Maui and dodged gunfire in Kathmandu.

Through these experiences, Matthew realized the profound need for a new type of education that is hands-on; action based and designed to solve real life problems. This realization led to the creation of Mycelium; an 18-month learning lab in Asheville, NC for tenacious innovators to dream up and create social enterprises that inspire positive, profitable and systemic change.

About TEDx: In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations).
