Taupo District Council have proposed a capital value rating system based on the freehold value of a property which would have some property rates rise dramatically. It is estimated that more than 50% of Taupo district's land area is owned by members of Ngati Tuwharetoa. The increase could cause some homeowners' rates bill to rise up to 300%.
