Perhaps appropriately for a 24 December upload, here is a berceuse by the British-born US composer J(ohn) Albert Jeffery (1855-1929), who seems best remembered as a composer of hymn tunes (in particular one called 'Ancient of Days' ). He started his musical education with his father, who was an organist in Plymouth, Devon, but emigrated to the US in 1876 - by way of studies with Liszt in Weimar and Reinecke in Leipzig - and was at one time music director of St Agnes' School in Albany, New York. By 1886 he was the organist of the Episcopal Cathedral of All Saints there. In 1900 - the year this piece was published - he was teaching at the New England Conservatory in Boston.
