Chapter Thirteen.
"That is so terrible," Oliver muttered, placing a hand on my leg and wiping a tear from my eye. "I'm so sorry you had to go through this."
I shook my head and there was an overwhelming silence in the room. "Thank you, for being here for me. I needed to tell someone... but you cannot tell Dr. Todd or his wife. Something just isn't right about them. I can tell. They're not good people." My voice sounded weak and dry.
He nodded and I knew he understood.
"Well, it's late. We should be getting some sleep," The boy reached for the candlestick to put it out, and I rested my head on the pillow; closing my eyes and allowing my mind to drift into slumber...

I woke up to the empty hotel room. I quickly threw the clothes that I had into the bag I brought with me and threw on my coat.
"Ah, yes," Michael said as he opened the door. He smiled warmly. "Vincent! I thought we would be expecting you. Please, come in!" I stepped inside the small yet comfortable apartment, where Nicki sat at the small kitchen table knitting something.
"Vinny! Sit down!" She piped, smiling.
I sat down across for her. "I hate to barge in, I really do. But I was wondering if you could give me some information about the barber that lives down the street."
Michael looked real grim. "Poor lad," He shook his head.
"The barber's name is Sweeney," Nicki said, her sad brown eyes staring down at the object she was knitting. "Wife and baby died a few years ago. Real nice man, though. His brother, however, is really cruel. He's a doctor- well, a dentist actually, but he calls himself a doctor. And his wife owns a meat pie shop."
Michael rubbed his cheek. "Not very well. I was eating one of Mrs. Todd's meat pies when I broke a tooth, then Dr. Todd took me upstairs and ripped the tooth out completely- not using any pain medication before or after. Now, at least, Sweeney lets me have a free shave whenever I need one."
He chuckled but I looked grim. I told the young couple everything- why I was in London and who I was chasing.
"We need to get her out of there-" Michael said promptly. "This girl- she is not safe at Dr. Todd's. I've heard... nasty things about him. Nastier than having my tooth ripped outta my head." I leaned forward, implying for him to continue his story. "I heard... When a man goes into the dentist's office alone, he goes missing afterwards... Supposedly, he takes a drill... into your skull, then gives your body to his wife for her meat pies..."
I stood up instantly. "I have to go save her-" I rubbed my chin. "I could use a shave."

I sobbed as Oliver's loud coughing shook the walls. I patted his shoulder gently. "It's going to be okay. We're going to get out of here."
"Where are we to go then?" He asked, trying to speak through his wicked coughing spell. "I- We cannot go home."
I looked at him for a moment. "We can make a home."
His coughing seized and Sweeney rushed into the room.
"Sweeney!" I exclaimed happily, then drew my voice back to a quiet whisper. "You've got to help us get out of here."
He looked at me sincerely with his large brown eyes. "I know. That's why I came. I just overheard my brother and his wife talking- it seems to be they are only after the money your grandmother left behind. They needed you to give them the location of where her safe is, then my brother was going to... nevermind, that. Sh, he's a key to get out of the front door. In ten minutes, my brother and his wife will be leaving to go shopping at the market, that'll give you enough time to at least get to the train station on the west side of London. Here is where you're headed to next, Nevaeh. Be safe."
I took the small paper he handed me and read the scribbled writing. 'Rooney's Asylum for the Mentally Insane- Athens Street New York City, USA'
"USA?" I repeated, confused.
Sweeney nodded. "It stands a good chance that your cousins are there. You'll have to take a train from London to Bude and then take a boat over to Ellis Island. I left a large sum of money in the fireplace downstairs. However, Nevaeh, your search may be disappointing."
"Why's that?" Oliver asked for me.
"Well, most believe that the only way to cure one of mental illness is by ice baths until they grow unconscious or even... a large shock of electricity to the brain."
