On a rainy Friday afternoon, it was a pleasure to take shelter inside of Mings Café, surrounded with the warmth of the kitchen and the savory aroma of fine Chinese food swirling around. And things got even better with the delightful music of Suzanna Choffel there to add to the delight to the atmosphere.
My past experience with the Austin Sessions was simply holding a microphone as the experienced veterans filmed and directed. Imagine my surprise when I was handed the camera and told that I was taping this session. Tentatively, I accepted the challenge, not wanting to submit to my anxiety of such a daunting task.
I had to rearrange the tables of the small seating area while trying not disturbing the customers enjoying their lunch. With this space I created, I was able to slyly maneuver around the café while recording Suzanna and her band from various angles. I also tried to utilize the zoom option to capture Suzannas passion as she sang her lyrical ballads as well as her bright, yellow rose ring as she strummed her guitar.
After her set, I had the opportunity to speak to Suzanna about our shared idol Fiona Apple, to whom her music can be compared (though not as cryptic) as well as her upcoming show at Momos during Austin City Limit weekend. New to the area, recording this session was an optimal way to learn more about the famed music scene, be introduced to one of the great local eateries, and meet with the friendly residents of the Austin area.
