La matanza del Templo Mayor is a symphonic poem written in 1999, which can be performed individually or as part of the suite "La Nueva España."
This is a set of six symphonic poems written between 1991 and 1999, which is dedicated to the conquest of New Spain (as Mexico was once called) by the Spanish in 1519-21. The cycle follows the chronological order of the historical events: in the 5th part, "La matanza del Templo Mayor," the Spaniards take advantage of the religious ceremonies of the Aztecs in the Main Temple and massacre them, in the absence of Cortés.
"The story is of great relevance and reminds us that cultural diversity is a precious asset that must not be squandered." ~ Lorenzo Ferrero
