One of the 10-year-old boys who beat a Daytona Beach homeless man is going to stay locked up for a long time. Thursday [June 28, 2007] morning, a judge sentenced the boy to time in a secure treatment facility.

For the first time in the case, the boy displayed real emotion and delivered a real apology. He even said he wanted to go home with his mom, but he is not going home, potentially for a long time.

The boy has been in juvenile detention since late March. That's when he and two other boys severely injured John D'Amico, a local homeless man, throwing rocks and a brick at him that left D'Amico blind in one eye.

The 10-year-old Daytona Beach boy buried his head in his mother's arms, Thursday, as the judge and attorneys discussed doctor's reports about the boy's health. They said he shows a lot of aggressive tendencies and threatens to hurt not just others, but himself.
