MEP Guy Verhofstadt, Brexit coordinator for the European Parliament, took a swipe at Nigel Farage’s march for Brexit in a fiery European Parliament rant in Straatsburg.
Verhofstadt insisted he was “surprised” to see Farage at the European Parliament in Strasbourg and not on the pro-Brexit protest march.
“But he is here. A 200-mile march. How many miles have you done – two miles?
Mr Verhofstadt compared his EU Parliament rival to Field Marshall Douglas Haig from Blackadder’s final episode. The character appears in the cult classic’s final episode to dictate the war efforts from London and not the trenches alongside Rowan Atkinson’s Captain Edmund Blackadder.
Nigel Farage warned the Brexit withdrawal treaty is a “slow motion betrayal” of the 2016 referendum in which 17.4 million Britons voted to leave the European Union.
The hardline Brexiteer said Britain faced a “national humiliation”.
“I thought what happened at the summit last week was a national humiliation, an impasse because we have Mrs May, a Prime Minister who hasn’t got the courage or who haven’t got the vision to carry out her many repeated promises. Namely, to take us out of the European Union this Friday. March 29 is not happening.
Mr Farage took a savage swipe at European Council President Donald Tusk after he said the door was open to a second Brexit referendum.
The former Ukip leader fired back and said: “Mr Tusk, if you think the British people have changed their minds on Brexit, you sir, are deluded because actually what we now see are opinion poll leads of 15 and in some cases nearly 20 percent in favour of leaving.
“If we had another referendum, leave would win it by a bigger margin. So why put yourselves through years of agony?”
