The Messer was a popular German medieval weapon, but was it a sword or a knife?

I was introduced to the Messer (capital M because that's the way they do nouns in Germany) through HEMA. It is a commonly studied weapon because the surviving treatises deal with it quite thoroughly, and it is a cheap and relatively safe weapon to play with.
