MACOMB, IL -- On Thursday, Feb. 28, the Western Illinois University Student Alumni Leadership Council (SALC) joined nearly 70 educational institutions worldwide to participate in the inaugural Student Engagement and Philanthropy Day.

SALC, in collaboration with the WIU Annual Fund, hosted a "Thank You" campaign from Wednesday, Feb. 27 at the WIU Alumni House to recognize the continued support and participation that Western and the Alumni Association have received from local alumni, faculty, staff, community members and friends over the past year. WIU students gathered at the Alumni House to compose more than 500 handwritten thank-you notes to alumni in the Macomb area.

The Thank you messages are posted on the WIU Alumni Association Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/WIUAlumni

SALC members thanked WIU faculty and staff members who have donated to the University during FY'14 by personally distributing purple "We are Western" wristbands.

"Western is fortunate to have generous and engaged alumni, faculty, staff and community members," said Vice President for Advancement and Public Services Brad Bainter. "We are very pleased by the student recognition and the 'Thank You' Campaign. The WIU Foundation focuses on student support, and this particular student initiative will resonate with our friends and supporters."

The national initiative, organized by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Affiliated Student Advancement Programs (ASAP), is designed to grow engagement on campuses and increase student understanding of philanthropy. Institutions participate in the event through various activities, including "thank-a-thons," day-long social media campaigns and student video interviews on what giving means to them. Student Engagement and Philanthropy Day is part of CASE ASAP's goal to foster and enhance student involvement in all areas of advancement, including fundraising, alumni relations, communications and marketing.

CASE ASAP provides programming, services and resources in advancement, including fundraising and alumni relations, for students and advisers at student alumni associations, student foundations and similar organizations at colleges and universities that are members of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

"We are incredibly thankful to have such a great group of alumni, faculty, staff and friends who regularly give of their time and talents. Partnering with ASAP has allowed us the opportunity to show our appreciation for everyone's continued support," said SALC Student Engagement and Philanthropy coordinator Charles Smith, a member of WIU's Class of 2015.
