The industry-led Blue Crab Design Team has been working in collaboration with watermen associations, Environmental Defense Fund and the Department of Natural Resources to look for ways to improve long-term management of the blue crab fishery in Maryland. In this process, the Design Team identified a need for improved reporting tools and additional economic opportunities, and fishery managers identified a need for timely, accurate and verifiable crab harvest. Together, this collaboration worked with the Oyster Recovery Partnership, Versar, Inc. and Electric Edge Systems to develop a pilot project to test ways to electronically report crab harvest. Roughly 50 industry volunteers used Samsung Galaxy tablets, Smartphones, a call center and texting to report harvest electronically. Other components of the project included a hail program, random spot checks and a central database that housed secure-access information for users. See what those involved say about the experience!
