"State evicts homeless camp

Staff report • Published March 05, 2013

Seven people were arrested this evening after activists ignored a 6 p.m. deadline to take down a homeless encampment erected on state property on Washington Street. The state is confiscating and storing the large tent that was placed on the property

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife earlier posted a cease and desist order at the camp, spokesman Jason Wettstein said.

Wettstein said the warehouse on the property is vacant and condemned and there are concerns about safety at the site. The state is working to sell the property to the Port of Olympia, which is looking for more parking space.

The tent was originally placed at the artesian well on Friday. But the Olympia Movement for Justice and Peace moved the tent to state property Monday after City Manager Steve Hall ordered them to leave the artesian well property.

State troopers asked for the camp to leave state property, said Alex Daye, a representative of the Olympia Movement for Justice and Peace. But campers haven't left.

Activists originally put up the tent Friday at the well to house homeless being displaced by the closure of cold-weather shelters. The action was also a protest against recently adopted city ordinances that ban camping on public property and increase restrictions on sitting and lying on sidewalks.
