Many great innovations began as toys built by individuals who love to tinker. In this talk, Poornima Vijayashanker tells us that she was introduced to technology, as a child, by her father who talked to her about 'wafers and chips'. At home, she wasn't afraid to take things apart; she even programmed the VCR, and installed the sound card in her family's first PC. While people use technology, they fear learning how to code and building things. Machines are seen as a black box that should be left alone! In her talk she explains that we need to reignite people's curiosity and imagination by getting back to engineering's roots - tinkering and playing with things to see how they work.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
