Dr. Amy Gutmann, president of the University of Pennsylvania since 2004, is internationally recognized for her success in increasing access to higher education and integrating knowledge across disciplines to maximize creativity and innovation. She created Penn's all-grant, no-loan guarantee for undergraduates, which has become a model for American universities.

Under her leadership, Penn completed its largest by far, and most
successful fundraising campaign in 2013, raising $4.3 billion. As CEO of Philadelphia's largest private employer, Gutmann is a leader in civic and business affairs.

Appointed by President Obama in 2009, Gutmann serves as chair of the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues. She is renowned for her scholarship on education, deliberation, and democracy. Among her many publications are Democratic Education, Identity in Democracy, Democracy and Disagreement, Why Deliberative Democracy?, and most recently The Spirit of Compromise (the last three with Harvard's Dennis Thompson).
