Approximately 2,300 George Washington University freshmen and student leaders visited 15 sites in the Washington, D.C.-area to volunteer their time for the university's third annual Freshman Day of Service. GW's service day coincides with the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. Students worked on service projects related to school beautification and restoration, environmental clean-up and intergenerational dialogue.

Special guest speaker, Eboo Patel, founder and president, Interfaith Youth Core and former member of President Obama's Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, opened GW's third annual Freshman Day of Service with remarks encouraging service through interfaith cooperation. Kaya Henderson, chancellor of DC Public Schools, spoke to the impact of service on local public schools. Corporation for National and Community Service Board Member, Stan Soloway, also offered brief remarks regarding the organization's partnership with GW and the importance of national service. GW President Steven Knapp and Provost Steve Lerman took the opportunity to welcome GW's class of 2015 to the university. Students and volunteers were then released for day-long service projects at various sites throughout the metropolitan area.
