Between this and my Touhou fanaticism, it seems I have an unhealthy obsession with dodging lasers.

This was one of my biggest time-wasters as a child. Recently I came upon a copy of it and decided to give it another play-through, this time on the highest difficulty level (Insane), since I recalled playing on Hotshot and Ace as a kid.

Quick little history lesson: Descent is a DOS game released back in late 1994; not too long after the release of Doom, which this game was pretty much intended as a direct response to. In fact, commercials and advertisements for the game at the time pretty shamelessly and pointedly boiled down to "Buy our game, because it's better than Doom." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrHAMz...)

While those sentiments seem a bit strong and arrogant, I'm willing to entertain that notion. Doom has it's strong points, and is an enjoyable game in its own right, but Descent DOES have a few things which Doom lacked, such as the full 3D movement (Doom was more what I call "2.5D". While the Z axis was present visually, the gameplay itself had almost no actual 3D aspects) as well as smarter AI (Descent AI actually makes efforts to avoid shots, and doesn't tend to mindlessly shoot through each other, for starters).

For whatever reason, Descent didn't do nearly as well on the market as its competitors, and is pretty much a forgotten gem nowadays, despite being, in my opinion, one of the most enjoyable and innovative FPS games of the time (or of all time, for that matter).

So anyway, here is the first level for Descent on Insane, the highest difficulty level. I'll be aiming to upload a full play-through of all 30 (27 + 3 secret) levels, if I can actually finish it. While this video doesn't make it look too hard, the game does ramp up in difficulty significantly.

Also, for those who are wondering, I WILL be starting a play-through of The Fairy Wars soon. In fact, that will probably be my next upload.
