James N. Hudson, age 79 of Rock Island, died Thursday, March 19, 2009 at his home surrounded by his family. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, 2009 at Hodgson Funeral Home 608 20th Street Rock Island. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 30, 2009 at Olivet Baptist Church 1115 21st Avenue Rock Island. Interment will follow at the National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal, with military honors bestowed by VFW Post 1303 and American Legion Posts 569 and 200. James was born on October 24, 1929 in Mayersville, Mississippi, the son of Nicholas and Alice (Butler) Hudson. He married Mary Elizabeth Cox on April 28, 1951 in Rock Island. She preceded him in death in 1997. James was an Army veteran, having served during the Korean War. He worked for John Deere in East Moline, retiring in 1987 following 30 years of service. He also worked for a time as a school bus driver after his retirement from John Deere. James was a member of Olivet Baptist Church, Rock Island, where he had served as a deacon and on the board of trustees. He enjoyed traveling, baseball, jazz music, vegetable gardening, bowling, and his Buick. Survivors (and spouses) include his daughters, Vanessa Rich, and Crystal (Keith) Jones, both of Chicago, IL; sons, Ronald Hudson, Los Angeles, CA, and Richard (Aloyce) Hudson, Phoenix, AZ; sister, Melinda Handy, Rock Island, brother Robert White, Mattson; 8 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and a loving extended family. In addition to his wife, his parents, a brother, Thomas Coleman, and sister, Corrine Stewart, preceded him in death.
