Yume Nikki is a strange, melancholy, nightmarish game centered around the life of a hikikomori named Madotsuki. Hikikomori is the tragic phenomena of young adults in Japan who withdraw completely from society to the point that they never leave their homes. All Madotsuki does all day long is watch TV, occasionally play Nasu (a game notorious for being futile and pointless) or write about her dreams in her diary. These dreams are the bulk of the 'gameplay' in Yume Nikki, but bucking many conventions the primary goal of the game is just to explore. You can kill any NPC you meet but there's no reason to do so any most enemies can't die, nor do they kill you instead forcing you to wake up. Her dreams are randomized with little internal logic beyond presenting surrealistic, wondrous, or frightening landscapes, objects and creatures to interact with.
All told Yume Nikki is very depressing. There's no redemption offered and the inescapable sense of gloom and doom about everything, but it's undeniably creative and emotionally powerful. It's attracted a worldwide fanbase as well.
