When you “cross a rubicon” you pass a point of no return, which is how Team Rubicon’s founders felt when they went into Haiti after the devastating earthquake of 2010.
U.S. Marine veterans trained to save lives under desperate circumstances, Jake Wood and William McNulty knew they had found their life calling: to organize veterans and first responders to help out with providing disaster relief across the US and around the globe.
“In the early days,” confides Stephen Hunt, CIO and CTO, “we thought of Team Rubicon as a small club. Then we grew 20,000 members in a 2-year period.”
Such rapid growth strains the document management systems of any organization and makes content management challenging. That’s where technology comes in.
The startup had been focused on helping those in need, not refining its technology systems. So it didn’t yet have a cohesive technology strategy and staff were indiscriminately using Google Drive, Dropbox and Box for sharing files.
Eventually, Hunt took an honest look at the organization’s tools and decided to focus on using Box exclusively “because it’s tailored as a business solution. It was head-to-head competition, but Box won the prize.”
With Box’s cloud content management platform, Team Rubicon experiences elevated collaboration and communication on a professional scale. The file management solution has allowed Team Rubicon to build documentation, policies and procedures as it has grown. Team Rubicon uses such documentation to mobilize teams around the world as they fulfill the main mission of helping people in dire need.
“This collaboration really allows us to refine our processes of what we do,” says Hunt. “Box is doing a tremendous amount for Team Rubicon. The simple act of helping someone is very powerful. It’s so clear to me what Box has done for our organization and will continue to do for a long time. I couldn’t imagine a better fit for us.”
