A mariachi performance is a fitting close to a conference about farmworkers: mariachi music evolved from a blend of the Spanish musicians who accompanied the conquistadors to Mexico, native Mexican music, and the music of African slaves brought to Mexico during the early colonial period.

Mariachi Mi Tierra Linda is a group of professional, passionate musicians based in Oakland, CA, and led by the son of a farmworker family in the Central Valley. They performed "Los Mandatos" ("The Favors"), a song about how workers are loved for their labor and hated for their presence, followed by "De Colores."

This performance concluded TEDxFruitvale, which was held on October 14, 2011 at Mills College in Oakland, CA. The conference's theme was Harvesting Change, and it focused on farmworkers, labor and other social justice movements, and fair labor practices in business.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event:

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
