A Henry County schoolteacher accused of leaving her students unsupervised, when two of them allegedly engaged in sex acts in a classroom, agreed Tuesday to resign rather than face a termination hearing, Channel 2 Action News reported.

April Lash, who teaches special needs math at Henry County High School, denied doing anything wrong and insisted that she had arranged for another teacher to cover an after-school tutorial. She had left school early to pick up her own child, her attorney, Lowell Chatham, said.

Lash told Channel 2, "I would never ever leave any of my children, anyone's child, not even my own child unsupervised in any situation that can jeopardize the health safety or welfare. Never."

School system attorney Will White told Channel 2 in a statement, "Basically, the allegations were that April Lash left the classroom unattended," and, "More importantly, she failed to make required reports" of the incident.

"She denied the allegations, and we've resolved it ... in a manner that we feel is fair, and we're satisfied with the result," White said.

Lash reached a settlement with the Henry County Board of Education in which she resigned. Chatham said that the settlement means Lash, who has a master's degree from Carnegie Mellon University as well as a law degree, will be able to continue teaching, just not in Henry County.

"The settlement and the resolution was fair under the circumstances," he said.

Lash said she will miss her students.

"I loved my students. My students are the best," she said. "The most important thing for me is that my kids know I truly miss them, I miss them tremendously, and I know they're graduating Friday, and I'll see if I can be there but I want to see them walk."
