There are two types of smoke alarms, ionization and photoelectric (both types can be either battery or hard-wired).
If you have a smoke alarms in your home chances are more than 95% they are the ionization type. These alarms are DEADLY because they do not safely detect fire in the early, smouldering stage.

FLAWED STANDARD
A dangerous loophole in Australia's smoke alarm standard has allowed ionization alarms to be sold since 1993. Because of the deadly limitations of ionization smoke alarms, photoelectrics have been mandatory in sleeping areas and exit paths in new commercial buildings since 2004.
