Dr. Mikel Prieto, Surgical Director of the Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Program, describes the kidney paired donation program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
The program allows recipients with living donors who have incompatibility or other disadvantages, such as age difference, to exchange donors. This results in a better match kidney for both recipients and contributes to the timeliness of transplantation.
Mayo Clinic has a large paired donor program with a unique computerized system to assist with finding matches. Over sixty paired donation transplants have been performed in collaboration with Mayo Clinic Arizona and Florida over the past two years.
