Road heritage in Japan during the Edo period, that is, 1603-1868 through these slide shows. Japanese road system was quite unique as for that time of day. No carriage and coach was used ever in Japan. Road was prepared only for the walking people. So, if there was a steep mountain pass, the road was paved with rough stones or stone stairs. In case that the summer sunshine and winter snow were not so comfortable for the travelers, rows of trees were planted along the roads. A kind of milestones made by barrows with trees were also arranged as a matter of convenience.
