Latinx? Latin@? Latino/a? Afro-Latin@ Hispanic? When it comes to defining Latinx identity in the United States today, the one common thread is its sheer complexity. We will:
- Deconstruct what it means to be Latinx in the U.S., including indigenous communities. - Discuss how racial categories are socially constructed with boundaries that move and how the label, Latinx/Hispanic, crosses racial categories in the U.S., and - Probe prejudice within the Latinx community (skin tone, hair texture, language, etc), as well as where Latinx experiences converge and diverge with black, white, and Asian communities.
