Last night the Modesto Police Department was called to the Shell Gas Station at 1728 Oakdale Rd. for reports that a man was acting unstable and being extremely violent, destroying items in the store.

When the first officer arrived on the scene he found the man in the parking lot armed with a metal chain. The crazed suspect lunged at the officer who fired a taser gun at him. The taser was not effective on the suspect who was suspected to be high on drugs. The suspect ran back into the store and barricaded himself in an office.

The store was evacuated. Everyone made it out unharmed, both the employees and patrons.

Additional units were called to the scene as police began work on a plan to take the man into custody. While officers were converging they could hear banging and thrashing in the office as the man destroyed everything around him.

High ranking officers with the Modesto Police Department decided to call in the Modesto Police SWAT Team when they could not get a response from the suspect after several different types of attempts at communication.

When the SWAT Team arrived on the scene they set up to the south of the building. After several hours of repeated attempts to talk the man into surrendering, the order was given to have the SWAT Team move in.

The team entered the gas station through the front door and made entry into the office. They were able to take the suspect into custody without further incident or injury. The suspect continued to struggle with officers even after being restrained.

The standoff lasted for a total of 5 hours ending just before 11:00 p.m.

The suspect was transported to an area hospital to be medically evaluated before being booked into the Stanislaus County Jail on a host of charges. The Modesto Police Department is expected to release the identity of the suspect in the coming hours.

On a side note; the incident attracted 100's of young onlookers who stayed throughout the entire standoff. The rowdy bunch stood for hours at the edge of the crime scene in hopes of seeing some action. It was an unusual site to see so many "looky loos" at an incident such as this.

Modesto News .org was there to bring you the most in-depth and highest quality video coverage of the incident, along with this Press Conference with Lt. Rick Armendariz of the Modesto Police Department.
