Miwa Matreyek, who received her MFA in Experimental Animation and Integrated Media at the California Institute of the Arts in 2007, is an internationally recognized animator, designer and multimedia artist based in Los Angeles. She creates animated short films as well as live works that integrate animation, performance and video installation. She also presented a TED talk about animation and performance in 2010 (see http://www.ted.com/speakers/miwa_matr...).
Matreyek discussed her creative process integrating animated graphics, live performance and video during an ATLAS Speaker Series presentation on Nov. 7, 2013. Her work juxtaposes body and media, the cinematic and theatrical, and hi-fi and low-fi to create spectacles. Her animations transform, expand and illuminate as they are combined with her body, physically in performance and composited as video elements in her short films.
Matreyek performed as part of a three-day festival MEDIALIVE: Exploring Live Audiovisual Arts, at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art. See www.bmoca.org/2013/ and http://www.semihemisphere.com.
