The Turtles were originally a college instrumental surf group called The Nightriders who later changed their name to The Crossfires.
At various times their line-up was: Howard Kaylan,Mark Volman, Al Nichol, Jim Tucker, John Barbata, Chuck Portz and Don Murray.
Having won several knock-out band competitions they earned a residency at Redondo Beache's Revelaire Club and some bookings at Hollywood's Red Velvet Club, where after backing big stars like Sony & Cher and The Drifters they gradually were seduced by the prevailing beat music. As a surf instrumental group, in 1963, they released three singles, 'Fibreglasss Jungle', 'That'll Be The Day' and 'One Potato, Two Potato'.

By 1964 seeing that British Invasion groups like the Beatles were going down big in the US, they started to imitate the British style to gain gigs. The following year saw 'It Ain't Me Babe' which was full-score beat reach number 8 in the US charts, and their next offering 'Let Me Be' have a 29 placing. 1966 was a mixed year with 'You Baby' at US 20, while 'Can I Get To Know You Better 'only at 89. But 1967 saw 'Happy Together' go to the number 1 spot and stayed there for three weeks. 1968 and 1969 kept up the success with 'Elenore' and 'You Showed Me' all in the US Top 10. The Turtles disbanded in 1970 after musical disagreements within the group.
